JD Talon: John Deere 1025R, 1023E with 120R loader

Will a loader work if I only have two quick-connect hydraulic outlets?

No. You need four outlets (two dual ports) for loader function. For example, if you have a JD 300 with two quick-connect outlets, you would need a converter kit to make a total of four. That would make the 300 function like the 318, but with no power steering.

Installation & Maintenance

How do I attach and detach the loader?

We have video guides for:

Detaching tip: First, find a safe area to remove the loader, then put the loader in a down position that allows both spring loaded pins to be pulled out and locked. Then shut off the tractor. Before removing hoses, push both tilt and arm levers up and down to remove back pressure. If you remove the loader and then have trouble reconnecting the bucket tilt hydraulics, wrap a rag around the male end of the nipple on the end of the tilt hoses and press down to let out some fluid. Fluid will spray out, and that should release any built-up pressure.

Are loaders shipped wet or dry?

They are shipped wet with hydraulic fluid and tested before shipping. We can ship them dry upon request.

We have been told that commingling Hydroguard with Type F-ATF fluid is not a problem. However, we can drain the cylinders and hoses after testing to allow you to use type F exclusively. You would have to add about a quart and a half to your system.

How do I connect the hoses?

  • Lower Left (Black), Lower Right (Green)

  • Upper Left (Silver), Upper Right (Yellow)
To use the mower deck, disconnect silver and yellow.

Loader Use & Accessories

What can my loader do?

Loaders are material movers—great for dirt, mulch, gravel, snow. Not for excavation. Read more about proper use →

Can I add a toothbar?

Yes, many customers use the Piranha Toothbar. As long as you’re not using the loader for excavation, the toothbar can be a helpful addition (read about this customer’s experience).

Can I keep the mower deck on?

  • 400, 420, 430: Deck must be removed.

  • All others: Deck can stay on.

To operate these attachments, most of our customers allow for a short pause while the lift cylinder travels to the end of the stroke before the tilt is actuated. They often crank the deck level to its highest level to minimize this. Some choose to install a lock-out valve to direct the function to the tilt when they are not using the deck for mowing. It is quite intuitive once you use it.

Can I keep my cab on?

  • Little Buck: Works with both hard and soft cabs

  • Little Bull: Not compatible with either cab type

Model-Specific Notes

For JD 650/750:

You must send your front weight bracket or photos for fitment confirmation. Tractor must have full accessory hydraulics.

For JD x700:

  • Consider replacing the pressure relief valve if you run the tractor hard

  • A cutoff valve or flow control valve may help

  • Check your tractor year at checkout

    • 2021+ models need a special bracket due to oil plug location

    • 4-wheel steer models require extra clearance

Attachments & Functionality

Will the loader cause wear at the mounting points?

No.

  • Little Buck: The base of our loader has a channel that attaches to your tractor’s front weight bracket with spring-loaded pins for a solid fit.

  • Little Bull: Heavy-duty mid-mount brackets prevent play and enhance the secondary attachment point: The base of our loader has a channel that attaches to your tractor’s front weight bracket with spring-loaded pins for a solid fit.

Will the Antler Grappler fit with my existing bucket accessories?

Yes, most setups will clear the Antler Grappler’s bolt-on plates, which are 24" apart center-to-center. We can adjust spacing for Tough Man plate users.

How do I tighten the Little Bull turnbuckles?

Turn until snug, then add a full hand-turn. Re-tighten if you notice any looseness.
